A small landscape. A connected response.

Watch a fire footprint develop, follow vehicles along the road network, and compare how the same residents (ABS Census 2021 counts) reach three exits. The centre view shows an OpenStreetMap road extract around Healesville and Toolangi, Victoria, on geographically aligned elevation relief. The six demand zones and three boundary exits are demonstration choices. Three official Neighbourhood Safer Place points are shown as map references only and are not used as route destinations. The right screen renders the same model perimeter as the centre map, with a closer camera, changing burned area and a still fire perimeter. The route hotspot panels show modelled road segments and simulated vehicles, not camera footage. Use the wind button on the fire panel or close a road on the centre map to explore the response.

This is a synthetic lab showcase, not an operational prediction or evacuation guide. It has only the official VicEmergency link opens a live external page. The simulation itself does not import live incidents, weather, traffic or emergency service status.

Present it

Use Full screen and Projector contrast on a large display. Start the guided showcase for four narrated, automatic scenario runs. Scrub the timeline to revisit any moment. At 1×, one real second represents one simulated minute.

The four scenarios

Try a road closure

Press Close / reopen road, then click a road on the centre map. A closure takes effect at the selected simulation time and is retained when you scrub. An event-closed or fire-closed segment cannot be reopened manually. Vehicles already on a closing segment finish that segment before rerouting.

How it works

A deterministic grid estimates an illustrative fire footprint from distance, wind direction and synthetic fuel variation. Roads close when sampled points intersect the footprint. Forecast shading shows the same model ten minutes ahead. It does not model fire intensity, spotting, terrain slope, suppression or smoke.

Real road polylines and junctions are retained; one-way tags are respected. Private/no-access roads and footpaths are excluded. Turn restrictions and roads beyond the extract boundary are not included. Speeds and capacities are synthetic. 1,600 vehicle agents each carry three people. Household preparation times are seeded and identical across scenarios. Dijkstra routing chooses roads by travel time and congestion. Each segment has a vehicle entry limit; queues and vehicles in transit are counted. Centre capacity is reserved on departure to avoid overfilling. Remaining time is a same-model forward run with the current closure history, rounded up to whole minutes; it is illustrative.

All residents remain accounted for as staying, waiting, queued, travelling or arrived. Data stays in this browser. Reloading clears manual edits. The HTML file includes all graphics and code and needs no internet connection.
